Institute for Scintillation Materials is Ukrainian leading research centre specializing on luminescent and scintillation materials research and development and can be ranked in the top of the European and international research organizations working in the area of radiation detection.
The main scientific directions
- scintillation and luminescent environment materials science;
- fundamental researches of radiation and matter interaction;
- the technologies and nano-technologies development on scintillation detectors production and production of devices on their basis.
ISMA have wide international relations and take an active part in high energy physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics experiments holding in USA, Japan, Switzerland, Italy, France, Russia, China and others.
Main achievements and developments
- The unique technologies have been developed and record by dimensions and properties alkali haloid, oxide and plastic large scintillators, scintillation layers, coverings have been produced;
- multi-channel delivery-detection sections for digital radiographic systems of diagnostics and control of welded connection, pipelines, metalwares and atomic/nuclear power-station equipment have been developed; radiation safety monitoring systems; radiation detectors for customs introscopic inspection systems (inspection of luggage, cargo, (passenger) cars and lorries, sea and air containers). The hand luggage inspection systems are successfully used at customs of Ukraine;
- big-volume scintillation detectors for nuclear medical diagnostic equipment were produced and their industrial production was established. Low-background scintillation materials were developed and detectors for experiments in the field of high energy physics and astrophysics were produced on their base.
- special luminescent probe class has been developed for the first time. These probes fix on stem cell cytoplasmic membrane; fundamental experiments concerning their migration in living organism have been conducted.
